Small Big Band

All charts are all ideal for beginner high school ensembles and have:

• sample bass lines
• comping figures for guitar and piano
• drum patterns
• backgrounds for solos
• composer notes
• Gais' charts have sample solos too!

Typical instrumentation

• 2 trumpets,1 trombone,3 saxes (ATB, AAT,ATT,TTB)
• 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 saxes (AT,TB,AB)
• Trumpet or Soprano Sax, 1 Alto sax, 2 Tenor saxes, 1 Baritone sax
• 2 trumpets, 1 French Horn, Alto or Tenor sax, 2 trombones.

All these combinations will as the pitch order is spread evenly. You can double Flute or Clarinet with the trumpets. Guitar can double the trumpet, saxes or trombone parts.
 
Solo sections of all charts have chord changes for all instruments. This creates a soloing opportunity for everyone in the group. Backgrounds are provided to add excitement to the solo and keep everyone engaged. 
 
You can use a lot of timbral combinations to add different colours to the pieces. For instance mutes if you have access to them:
 
Trumpet 1 with cup mute, Trumpet 2 with Harmon Mute,Alto and Tenor saxes, Trombone 1 with cup mute and Baritone sax. Flute can double with trumpet 1.

	Composer's notes for Lunachicks 'Lunachicks' is a calypso written in the style of Sonny Rollins' St. Thomas. It can be played at 132-144. It has a 32 bar from with a slightly tricky bridge. There are two solo variations. The first is an easier 8 bar form, the second form is more complex and follows the tune. You can get the guitarists and/or pianists to join in at the B section of the melody or when soloing begins if you wish to add some variety when presenting the tune for a concert. For flute, trumpet, alto & tenor saxes, bone and rhythm section.

	Composer's notes for Moonwater Blues 'Moonwater Blues' Starts with a 12 bar unaccompanied bass solo. If this seems too difficult at first it can be added when your bassist feels more confident making up their own solo or using the one provided. This tune has a medium tempo of a crochet= 88-94 and has a standard 12 bar minor blues form. For flute, trumpet, alto & tenor saxes, bone and rhythm section.

	Composer's notes Varkarsians 'Varkarsians' is a quirky 16 bar swing tune.The melody will sound fine without guitar and piano accompaniment if you want to challenge the frontline players to keep the tempo stable until the B section or when soloing begins. The tempo is medium with a crochet= 132-138. Varkarsians has two solo sections-one shorter, easier section and one that goes over the entire 16 bar form for more experienced players. For flute,trumpet, alto &tenor saxes, bone and rhythm section.
